THUNBERG, Carl Peter and Carolus Henricus EKSTRAND.
Fauna Brasliensis [sic].Uppsala, Palmblad et C. 1823. Small 4to. With a thin marbled paper strip to reinforce the spine.
[4], 9, [1] pp.Very rare first edition of an overview of some species of the Brazilian fauna. The work is the dissertation of Carolus Henricus Ekstrand, who had to defend it, although Thunberg, presiding the work, is considered to be the actual author, as was common these days. Carl Peter Thunberg (1743-1828) was a Swedish natural historian and pupil of Carl Linnaeus. As researcher for the Dutch East India Company (VOC), Thunberg sailed to South Africa, where he is considered to be a pioneer in botanical investigation, and moreover to Japan, where he became the first Western scientist to investigate Japan botanically. In 1784 he succeeded Linnaeus as professor at the university of Uppsala. The present dissertation provides a small catalogue of animals living in Brazil that came up to their knowledge, listing birds, fishes and mammals.A highly interesting zoological work on Brazilian animal life, written by one of the most important taxonomists after Linneaus.Very slightly browned, but overall in excellent condition. A scarce dissertation on Brazilian zoology.l L.C. THUNBERG, CARL PETER; J. A. SCHULTES (EDITOR)
Flora Capensis : Sistens Plantas Promontorii Bonae Spei Africes
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2014. Facsimile Edition. Original Wrappers. ISBN: 1108067794. 803 pages. Stamped damaged on verso title page. Otherwise in new condition. ; Paperback; Octavo; The Swedish botanist Carl Peter Thunberg (1743__1828) , a physician and pupil of Linnaeus, carried out his most important work in South Africa and Japan. Having studied in Amsterdam and Leiden, he was asked to go plant-hunting in areas where the Dutch East India Company's trading activities were opening up territory for scientific exploration. In 1771 he travelled to South Africa as a ship's doctor, spending three years searching for, classifying and propagating plants, while at the same time becoming fluent in Dutch, as only the Dutch were allowed to enter Japan, his ultimate destination. Having acquired many Japanese specimens, he continued his travels and returned to Sweden in 1779. Three fascicles of this influential reference work in Latin on the South African flora were issued between 1807 and 1813. Reissued here is the full version edited by the Austrian botanist Josef August Schultes (1773__1831) and published in 1823.. As New with no dust jacket .

Bookplates and old ownership signatures. First edition. Light foxing throughout.Thunberg, pupil of Carl von Linné and known as "the Father of Japanese Botany", wrote this interesting narrative about his voyage to South Africa and Japan between the years 1770 and 1779. He stayed for three years at the Cape before joining a Dutch voyage via Batavia to Japan, arriving in Nagasaki in August 1775. He was confined to Deshima (the Dutch trading post on the artificial island in the bay of Nagasaki) for much of the time but was eventually allowed ashore to make botanical excursions. In the spring of 1776 he participated in a mission to Edo (Tokyo) to meet the emperor. Then he was able to study and collect specimens of local plants and seeds. On the return voyage he visited Java and Ceylon. Later Thunberg succeeded Linné as professor at Upsala. A glossary of Swedish and Japanese, and a vocabulary of the Malay language (called an Arabic dialect) are included. Cordier BJ 445 & BI 1384. Mendelssohn ii, 499. Pritzel 9259.
